由於以下介紹的書籍，很多隻要從書名就可以知道內容在說什麽，因此有些我並未多加解說。除此之外，也有一些我雖然很想放上來誇耀一下，但要是出問題就麻煩了，所以不能列出的內部資料。雖然我很確定那些並沒有抵觸「特定秘密保護法」（笑）。
當然，光憑以下書籍並無法理解一切。應該說，就算讀了許多資料，也隻會產生自己究竟懂不懂的質疑與不安。
總之，「知道自己不懂」才是最重要的。我想我隻能說，幸好本書是小說，既非資料書也不是教科書吧。

本書是波灣戰爭當時的美國參謀首長聯席會議主席，後來擔任國務卿的作者自傳。雖然很可能是為了參選總統而寫，不過的確是一本生動描繪戰後美國陸軍史的某種麵貌的好書。因為書中完全隻有敘述他本人的體驗，所以說服力相當高。讀完之後，會讓人覺得這個從外來移民的非裔孩子爬升成為軍隊領袖（而且還沒有讀過官校），甚至當上國務卿的人果然不簡單。
